A collection of historical maps about Balkan ethnography

The following maps illustrate the geographic distribution of ethnic groups and their various identifiers over time in the Balkan peninsula. Due to its desirable geo-political position, its development has been marked by an amalgam of peoples, cultures, and politics. Significant historical migrations and empirical expansions have played a part in Balkan ethnography from ancient Roman times through to Austro-Hungarian and Ottoman conquests, the World Wars, the Cold War, and beyond. Lingering divisions over these population shifts and power exercises have had various consequences for the contemporary period.
